Delo Y. Aton, corporate affairs manager of CLIP, said Knowles signed a contract with them just this month for a five-hectare property at the zone.
Knowles will immediately need 2,000 workers, but officials plan to ramp up their workforce to between 5,000 and 8,000.
“We are very happy about this because this will provide more jobs for our people,” Aton said.
Knowles will be among the biggest electronics companies to invest and operate in Cebu. The company makes components for hearing aid devices as well as MEMS surface mount microphones for major mobile phone brands and consumer electronic devices.
Negotiations took more than a year
Among its other products are receivers and speakers, MEMS joystick, headsets, sensors and hearing aid accessories.
Aton said negotiations with Knowles took more than a year, but company executives eventually decided to locate in Cebu because of the province’s metropolitan setting in a resort environment.
Knowles is based in Illinois, but has technical support offices and manufacturing facilities worldwide, including China and Malaysia.
CLIP is a 63-hectare economic zone developed and operated by the Science Park of the Philippines, Inc. on Mactan Island. Including Knowles, it has 30 locators based on Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) records. The zone is located about six kilometers from the airport.
